Animal Shelter

The Walsenburg Animal Shelter is a "no-kill" municipal facility licensed by the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA). It provides temporary housing for dogs brought in by law enforcement, and after a five-day hold, the dogs may become available for adoption.

• Note: The facility is only licensed to take in dogs and does not generally accept owner surrenders due to limited kennel space

Animal Shelter

The Walsenburg Animal Shelter is a municipal impound facility that serves to support the Animal Control Division of the Walsenburg Police Department.  Its primary function is to provide temporary housing for dogs brought in by the Animal Control Officer or law enforcement.  Dogs picked up as strays are held at the impound facility for a total of five days before they become the property of the City of Walsenburg, at which point they may be transferred to other facilities or made available for adoption.  With a euthanasia rate of well under 10%, the Walsenburg Animal Shelter is considered a “No-Kill” facility.  

 Licensed by the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA) as a small animal shelter, the facility can intake dogs impounded by law enforcement, either as strays running at large, vicious dogs, or under special circumstances (such as the death of an owner).  Currently it is not licensed to take cats or any animals other than dogs.  Due to very limited kennel space, owner surrenders are not generally accepted.
