Lathrop State Park

Colorado's first state park, is located near Walsenburg and offers a variety of activities centered around its two lakes, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and golfing with views of the Spanish Peaks. A valid state park pass is required for entry.

Activities and features

 

Water recreation
  • Martin Lake: This lake is designated for speed boating, water skiing, sailing, and windsurfing. There is a designated swim beach area that is open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, which has picnic tables and grills.
  • Horseshoe Lake: This lake is a "no-wake" zone, making it ideal for peaceful activities like canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The lake is known for its large tiger muskies.
  • Accessible launch: An ADA-accessible canoe/kayak launch is located on the south side of Horseshoe Reservoir.
  • Fishing: Both lakes are stocked with a variety of fish, including trout, bass, catfish, and pike. A children's fishing pond is located near the Martin Lake dam.
Trails
  • Hogback Nature Loop Trail: An easy 1.5-mile trail with a self-guided brochure that details the area's plant, animal, and historical features. It offers views of the Spanish Peaks and other mountain ranges.
  • Cuerno Verde Trail: A 3-mile paved loop popular with bicyclists that goes around Martin Lake.
  • North Side Trail: This 4.5-mile trail is open to hikers and bikers and crosses the Hogback Ridge.
  • Equestrian Trail: Located west of Horseshoe Lake, this trail requires a park pass and offers designated parking.
Camping and lodging 

Lathrop has 103 campsites open year-round that are available by reservation. Pets are allowed in the campgrounds on a leash

  • Piñon Campground: Features pull-through and back-in paved sites with electric hookups (up to 50-amp), fire pits, and picnic tables. It is within walking distance of the golf course.
  • Yucca Campground: Offers a more basic (non-electric) experience with dirt and gravel sites. It is near the highway, which can produce some traffic noise.
  • Group Camping: There are areas that can accommodate groups of 30 to 50 people
Other facilities
  • Walsenburg Golf Course: This 9-hole golf course is located within the park. It includes a full-service restaurant and bar.
  • Archery Range: An archery range is available with 20, 50, and 80-yard targets. No park pass is required to access the range.
  • Visitor Center: Offers historical murals, interpretive displays, and supplies like firewood and ice.
